Is CBD Safe for Your Pet?

image of cbd safety graphic

Now that CBD is readily available at most pet stores, you may have been wondering, is CBD safe for your pet? The answer is yes. But we understand that you want to know exactly what makes it safe. Also, it is important for you to understand what makes it safe for pets and what makes it unsafe for pets. For example, THC is not safe for pets. You need to know the difference between both a hemp cannabis plant and a marijuana cannabis plant. Both cultivars fall under the umbrella term cannabis, but they are not the same. Moreover, most of the CBD you will find for sale in the United States is hemp-derived CBD. Both plants do contain CBD, but the effects of each plant differ greatly. In the United States, only industrial made hemp-derived CBD products are legal for sale and purchase in stores, this includes pet stores. Remember, hemp-derived CBD is non-psychoactive, therefore rendering it suitable for pets.

Treatibles products are made with full-spectrum hemp-derived CBD. Our products go through rigorous testing to ensure that they are not only safe for your pets but also for quality assurance. Every ingredient in our products is of the highest quality. We thought that we would give you a few insights on CBD safety and answer a few questions you have asked us about CBD safety for pets. The first rule is to purchase your CBD products from a reputable brand. With so many products on the shelves and good marketing you need to use your discernment. Also, word of mouth – ask other pet owners who administer CBD to their pets about their experience and preferred brands. You will learn very quickly which brands stand out from the rest and make an informed decision based on your research and first-hand experiences.

Here is what you should know:

  • What are the benefits of CBD for pets? When the endocannabinoid system (ECS) interacts with CBD, it contributes to the overall wellbeing of your pet since all animals have endocannabinoid receptors. What does this mean? An endocannabinoid is an integral modulator of the synaptic function. Simply, it is the body’s blueprint, like a machine, that helps regulate itself. It keeps that body at its optimum level. When this system is not functioning at its optimum level CBD can be a beneficial aid in regulating your system and bringing it back to its equilibrium. Inflammatory conditions are often an indication of disequilibrium of the synaptic function – the body is out of balance. CBD helps to bring the body back into balance. This is why many people administer CBD to their pet who has, for example, a physiological condition.
  • What dosage range is safe? The safety of CBD is quite strong so the dosage level you can administer to your pet can be based on the individual needs of your pet. It is quite hard for your pet to overdose on CBD. You can freely experiment with the optimal dosing needs of your pet. Now, this does not mean you should not start slow. We always advise you to start slow and low to determine if less or more is needed.
  • Are there adverse effects?  The National Animal Supplement Council requires its members to report all adverse events into their VAERS system on a monthly basis.  With over 1141 products marketed in 14 years, there have been over 920 million administrations of CBD pet products to dogs, cats and horses.  Of those administrations, there were only 1,680 reported adverse side effects; of those adverse events, 19 were categorized as seriousThis means a toxicity level of .00000002% – phenomenal! This is an impressive safety record of accomplishment in comparison to the data for other medicines. Also, for pharmaceutical medicines given to pets the dosage range is small and the toxicity level is stronger. CBD has a low toxicity range; therefore, the dosage range is a little more generous. Pets who experience sensitivity to CBD may have diarrhea, vomit, or drowsiness, but usually just have a long, great nap. However, this occurs when they are given too much.  Raphael Mechoulam, an Israeli researcher, referred to as the “father of cannabis,” stated that CBD is the safest chemical he has ever researched. He was known for his extensive research on the cannabis plant and identified the benefits of CBD for several conditions, outweighing the benefits of current conventional treatments.

Be sure to consult your pet care provider before administering CBD or any other therapeutic to your pet. It is important to make an informed decision, the more you know the better! As always, we are always here to answer your questions. We hope that we can help you navigate CBD safely in pet care.
