Paws for Celebration: It’s National Welsh Corgi Day! 🐾

If you’ve spent any time on the internet lately, you know that the Welsh Corgi is basically the unofficial mascot of the web. Between their iconic “sploots,” their expressive “corgi smiles,” and those fluffy, gravity-defying behinds, they have captured hearts worldwide.

Today, March 1, we officially celebrate National Welsh Corgi Day! It’s the perfect time to honor these “dwarf dogs” (the literal translation of cor gi) who pack a massive personality into a compact, low-to-the-ground frame.

A Tale of Two Corgis

Did you know there are two distinct breeds? While they might look alike to the untrained eye, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi have different histories:

  • The Cardigan: The older of the two, tracing back over 3,000 years. They are known as the “Corgi with the tail” and curl up at the end.
  • The Pembroke: These are the pups made world-famous by Queen Elizabeth II.Their tails are held lower, more like a German Shepherd (and can touch the ground, which is one reason why they were docked for so long).

3 Fun Facts to Share Today

  1. Fairy Steeds: According to Welsh legend, Corgis were the preferred mount for fairies and elves! They were said to pull fairy coaches and herd “fairy cattle.” If you look at the fur on a Pembroke’s shoulders, you might see the “fairy saddle” markings.
  2. Professional Herders: Don’t let the short legs fool you. Corgis were bred to herd cattle. Their height was a strategic advantage—it allowed them to nip at the heels of cows and duck quickly before getting kicked!
  3. Big Brain Energy: Corgis are consistently ranked among the smartest dog breeds. They are highly trainable but also possess a “bossy” streak, often trying to herd their humans (and children) around the house.

How to Celebrate

Whether you own a Corgi or just admire them from afar, here is how you can join the fun:

  • Host a “Sploot-Off”: If you have a Corgi, post a photo of their best “sploot” (stretching their back legs out flat) using the hashtag #NationalWelshCorgiDay.
  • Extra Treats: Since Corgis are notoriously food-motivated, today is the day for an extra dental chew or a tiny piece of carrot.
  • Support a Rescue: Consider donating to organizations like the Pembrokeshire Corgi Rescue or local breed-specific rescues that help these pups find their forever “castles.”

Happy National Welsh Corgi Day to all the “loafs” out there! 🐶🍞
