Results from a recent survey by Leafreport.com, the CBD industry’s peer-reviewed watchdog website, showed that 50% of pet guardians currently offer CBD products to their pets and 74% would recommend it to other pet parents. This is a big win for cats, who have traditionally been underserved in discomfort and stress management. While it is promising that so many cat parents are embracing, understanding and witnessing the benefits of hemp-derived CBD, confusion remains about the proper amount to administer. We often get asked the question: How much CBD does my cat need? The answer: One size does not fit all.
Every cat is a unique individual with individual needs. Administration and frequency can depend on a number of factors, including the circumstance (vet visit, fireworks, moving, new family member), issue being addressed (stress, anxiety, recovery, joint discomfort, mobility), metabolism, activity level, how quickly the receptors in the cat’s endocannabinoid system process phytocannabinoids and more.
It can take a few administrations to establish the perfect amount for each cat.
- Although most dogs do well beginning with 1 mg of CBD per every 10 lbs. of body weight, we have found that many cats need more. That is why our regular strength Soft Chewables for Cats contains 1.5 mg of CBD per Chewable, with the recommendation of starting with one Chewable for every 10 lbs. of body weight. That can be increased ten times, depending on the cat’s needs.
Quick reference: 1 mg CBD/10 lbs. up to 10 mg CBD/10 lbs.
- We’ve also recently introduced Extra Strength Soft Chewables for Cats with 3 mg of CBD per Chewable. Again, we recommend starting with one Chewable per 10 lbs. of body weight, however, some cats may need as many as five.
- Our 90 mg CBD, 250 mg CBD and 750 mg CBD Oil Dropper Bottles are also excellent options. Although the 750 mg bottle is labeled for use in dogs, many cat parents find it to be a convenient and economical choice because the high potency means fewer drops are needed per administration.

We generally recommend offering every 4 – 8 hours, as needed. Some cats may only need one administration per day, while others may require two to three times per day to experience calm, balance and ease.
Keep in mind that in more extreme situations, more CBD may be needed. You may also find that over time, fewer mg of CBD are needed per administration.
