Happy CATober 9th®: The Universal Birthday Every Shelter Cat Deserves

When you bring a rescue cat home, you learn a lot about them very quickly. You learn exactly which spot behind their ears yields the loudest purrs, whether they are a window-watcher or a blanket-burrower, and precisely how early they expect breakfast to be served.

But there is one detail most rescue parents will never know: the exact day their feline best friend was born.

That’s where CATober 9th® comes in.

Launched by North Shore Animal League America, CATober 9th® was officially declared the universal birthday for all shelter cats whose actual birth dates remain a mystery. It is a day dedicated to celebrating the incredible resilience of rescue kitties and honoring the beautiful second chance they get when they finally find their forever homes.

Why a Universal Birthday Matters

For purebreds and pets purchased from breeders, a birthday is a known milestone. For the millions of cats waiting in shelters—many found as strays, rescued from difficult situations, or dropped off without medical histories—a birthday is usually just a veterinarian’s best guess on a piece of intake paperwork.

CATober 9th gives rescue families a dedicated day on the calendar to break out the tuna cakes, buy a new feather wand, and properly celebrate the day their cat came into the world. More importantly, the North Shore Animal League uses this holiday to shine a massive spotlight on the feline adoption crisis, encouraging animal lovers everywhere to open their homes to a pet in need.

How to Celebrate CATober 9th This Year

You don’t need to throw a massive party to get into the spirit of the holiday (though your cat certainly wouldn’t mind if you did). Here are a few ways to honor the day:

  • Spoil Your Own Rescue: If you already share your home with a shelter cat, today is the day to treat them like royalty. Pick up their favorite wet food, sprinkle a little extra catnip on their scratcher, and spend some dedicated time playing with them.
  • Make it Official: Pick October 9th as the official date you write down on your pet’s vet forms moving forward!
  • Support a Local Shelter: Shelters are chronically overwhelmed during the fall. Drop off a donation of clumping litter, unopened food, or fleece blankets to your local rescue organization.
  • Adopt: The absolute best way to celebrate CATober is to give a shelter cat a reason to celebrate next year. If you have the space, the resources, and the love to give, head to a local rescue and meet your new best friend.

Whether your rescue cat is a tiny, chaotic kitten or a gentle, gray-muzzled senior, they deserve to be celebrated. Happy CATober 9th to all the mystery-aged shelter cats out there!
