A new year offers the promise of new beginnings. It’s a great time to make positive and healthy changes in our lives. The same holds true for our pets! Here are some New Year’s Resolutions that will enhance your pet’s life.
Schedule an annual exam
A yearly physical is important for pets. During the exam, the veterinarian will check the eyes, ears, mouth, nose and vital signs, as well as feel for any abnormalities in various organs. Some exams include a urinalysis. For senior pets, blood work is also important. In addition, vaccines may be given (work with your vet to establish a personalized schedule based upon your pet’s specific needs. Many vaccines provide extended immunity and are not needed annually). A great benefit to annual exams is health conditions can be caught early and managed more easily. This can save pets from unnecessary discomfort and money for their human. Unfortunately, more than half of cats and nearly a quarter of dogs only visit a veterinarian when suffering from a health issue.
Upgrade their diet
Commit to providing the best possible food for your fur baby that works within your budget. Refresh toys and schedule interactive playtime
Pets can be tough on their toys. Take a look through and discard any that are damaged. Maybe add one or two new toys to their collection. We suggest rotating toys every couple of weeks to keep pets excited.
One of the best ways to strengthen the bond between you and your pet is to spend more time playing together. Make a plan to spend 10 minutes, two or three times a day playing with your pet. Cats love interactive toys like wands with feathers or ‘prey’ on the end. Get them moving! Pull over furniture or under doors. Inside play with dogs can include a game of fetch or tug of war with a toy. Have a senior pet? A game of hide and seek gets them moving and stimulates their mind.
Make daily walks more interesting
For your pet, going for a walk means more than simply moving the body. It provides access to his whole universe. Every tree, every bush, every stairway gives him an opportunity to survey his territory and know who else has been there. By alternating routes, you will expand his world. Try putting your phone away and engage with him. Instead of pulling on the leash every time he stops to sniff something, remember that he is collecting information. Let him do it! To make walks even more comfortable, consider a harness instead of a collar. Over time, the constant pulling on a collar can cause damage to the trachea. Harnesses also help keep bodyweight even, which is beneficial for dogs and cats with joint and mobility issues.
Get a new litter box
Your cat’s throne needs a yearly update. Older boxes are often scratched up, which can harbor bacteria, even after a thorough washing. Be sure to purchase a box that fits your cat’s needs. Older cats need easier access, so a lower entry point is preferred. Some cats require a roomier litter box or one with higher sides.
