December is National Cat Lovers Month! What defines a cat lover? Someone who goes above and beyond to make their cat’s life the best it can be. We have found that most devoted cat parents follow these 10 commandments:
Obey the kitty (a.k.a., your overlord)
If your cat wants his food stirred again, do it. If he prefers napping on a blanket folded meticulously into a triangle, get it ready. If he insists on four kisses and two head bops when you get home, definitely oblige.
Keep all internal doors ajar
Cats don’t necessarily want to go into the room behind the closed door; they just want to know they can. Closed doors also eliminate escape routes, which can make some cats feel vulnerable. And of course, if you are in a room with a closed door, it means they can’t be with you.
Understand bathrooms are for sharing
As unnerving as it can be at first, cat people all get used to doing their business with a friend in the room. Cats = no privacy.
Do not disturb a sleeping cat on your lap
It doesn’t matter if you have plans, someone’s at the door, or if your leg has fallen asleep. All cat lovers must live by this commandment (and most do willingly).
Accept presents with grace and gratitude
Whether your cat presents you with a half-eaten rodent, tailless lizard, or a toy mouse, offer praise and a sincere thank you. Either your cat is trying to feed you or letting you know that you are a terrible hunter.
Share the bed
Somehow, a 10-pound cat can stretch out and require approximately 3/5 of a king size bed. You will be fine in the fetal position near the edge.
Feel needed when kneaded
Kittens knead their mothers while nursing to help stimulate the flow of milk. This is one of the happiest times in their lives. When a cat kneads his human, it is believed he is having a happy memory AND thinks of you as his human mom. Bonus if the session includes drooling.
Embrace the zoomies
Although cats often ramp up while we are powering down, the zoomies represent part of their hunting instinct – the sprint! For indoor kitties, the zoomies are a natural way to burn energy and get some extra exercise. It is often a good time to engage your kitty with interactive play.
Keep the box
2020 has caused an uptick in home delivery. This is a boon for cats, as it’s no secret they love boxes. Amazon even began including instructions on how to build a cat condo out of their smiling boxes. Not only do boxes create a new, safe territory and a great place to hide, the cardboard provides insulation, making it a very comfortable place to curl up.
