Treatibles May 2019 Rescue Spotlight: Berkeley Humane

Puppy being carried by a volunteer

Bart

Bart was an extremely smart puppy who would have been a challenge for most families to handle. Some might have said he was too smart for his own good. He had a lot of energy, but by channeling that energy into training, Berkeley Humane was able to prepare Bart for living with a wonderful family.

Lilith

Lilith

Lilith may have looked tough because someone cropped her ears, but when she sat and gently licked us through the kennel bars at the municipal shelter, where she had been for over a month, our team knew they couldn't read a book by its cover. Lilith's gentle personality won over all the volunteers and on her very first weekend up for adoption one of Berkeley Humane's volunteers decided she couldn't live without her!

simpsonsLitter

Simpsons Litter

When this energetic litter of 9 black kittens arrived at Berkeley Humane, it was hard to tell them apart! Since black cats are often the last to be adopted, it took Berkeley Humane a couple of months to find homes for all of them. We lovingly referred to them as little black panthers and were so happy when they all found loving homes.

jethro

Jethro

Jethro had a lot of behavioral challenges that made him a difficult dog to find a good home for. His anxiety was significant, and even walking on a leash through the neighborhood would have him on constant alert and required a lot of hard work from staff and our foster volunteers to help build his confidence.

“Berkeley Humane is grateful to Treatibles for its generous product donation and is assessing its use with our shelter animals”

Berkeley Humane, located in Berkeley, California, serves the people and animals of their community by providing life-saving programs for cats and dogs, cultivating compassion, and strengthening the human-animal bond.
The organization focuses on where they can have the most impact: medically needy animals who are most often at the highest risk for euthanasia. These are the hardest-luck animals that might not have a chance.

“Most of the animals we rescued last year needed and received extensive medical care before adoption,” said Morgan Pulleyblank, Director of Development and Communications. “This year we expect to complete more than 1,250 adoptions, while also continuing to rescue some of the most difficult, medically challenged cases from local municipal shelters.”

Berkeley Humane touched the lives of more than 2,000 animals in 2018, and transferred in 1,085 animals from 14 different municipal shelters across the greater Bay Area, with another 141 animals arriving from other sources, such as owner surrenders in need of re-homing or found/abandoned litters.
The Berkeley Humane story goes back more than a century. In 1895, local residents concerned about financial irregularities and deplorable conditions at the Berkeley Dog Pound came together and formally organized the Berkeley SPCA. Within a year, The Oakland Tribune published a report celebrating a quick and impressive turnaround at the Berkeley Pound under their leadership. We moved to our current location in 1927, and continue this tradition—providing the most cutting-edge service to the hardest luck animals to save lives.
