4 things to know about raw dog food

What you should know about giving your dog raw food

Raw dog food is not a trend. Nor is it new. Raw food is what undomesticated cats and dogs would consume, but does this mean that you should feed your cat or dog raw food? Also, what exactly is raw pet food? These two questions that come to mind might have landed you on our site. Hopefully, we can give some good insights. First, we want to say that we are not promoting any specific diet. In addition, you need to consult your animal care specialist before you venture into a new diet. We like to remain impartial and share a few good tips to add to the information you may have found online or from other pet owners. Raw dog food is more so what most people tend to talk about. For this post, we will keep our focus here.

4 Things You Should Know About Raw Dog Food:

1. Fresh vs Raw
You might think raw dog food is like the wet dog food you get in a can at the grocery store. Raw dog food consists of uncooked meat, fresh fruits, grains, and vegetables. Whereas fresh dog food consists of minimally processed foods and no preservatives. Fresh dog food is a step up from canned dog food, and some consider it the gold standard of package dog food. Think of it as a fresh meal you cooked at home, but for your dog. Some pet owners make their own fresh dog food with grass-fed meats, grains and vegetables. Freshpet is a popular dog food brand that many fresh dog food pet parents love.

2. What are the benefits?
Please note that feeding your dog a raw dog food diet requires more thought than simply going to the grocery store and cutting up a steak. Yes, it is true that raw dog food boasts quite a few benefits. It is made from protein-rich animal sources loaded with vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Raw unprocessed fruits and vegetables maintain their nutrient-dense properties. Raw dog food enthusiasts say their dogs have healthier skinshinier coatscleaner teethhigher energy levels and smaller stools.

3. What are the best food sources?
Organic, preservative-free, antibiotic-free, grass-fed meat is best (dogs eat muscle meat). Also, aim for organic vegetables and fruits. If you order farm-to-table meat boxes for your family, it might be a good idea to find a company that caters to a fresh or raw dog food diet for dogs.

4. Proceed with Caution
It is important to follow proper food handling methods when considering raw food for dogs to eliminate pathogens. Store raw dog food in the freezer and thaw pet food in a sealed container away from human food in the fridge. Do not use the microwave or thaw in water. Wash and sanitize all utensils and pet food bowls after use. Use separate bowls, cutting boards, and utensils. Also, store your raw dog food separately. Raw meat, when not handled with care, could make your pet sick. To avoid cross-contamination and spreading bacteria, do not wash raw meat. Only wash vegetables and fruits. Some people soak their vegetables in a 10% saltwater bath to remove pesticides as well. Do not leave raw dog food in their bowl after mealtime and store unfinished food right away in the fridge, in a sealed container.

Remember to discuss with your veterinarian or a veterinarian nutritionist before you get started. You may want to start with fresh dog food before you transition to a raw dog food diet for dogs
